Head, Heart, and Hara:
An Introduction to Kiiko Matsumoto’s Style of Acupuncture

March 10 & 11 in Portland, Oregon

For the first time in more than a decade, Kiiko Matsumoto is coming to Portland.

Author of the paradigm-bending classic Hara Diagnosis: Reflections on the Sea, Kiiko will demonstrate acupuncture techniques to strengthen and balance the Three Tan Tien (the “Head, Heart, and Hara”). Over 30 years of intensive study and practice, Kiiko has refined a dynamic approach combining Taoist insights, canonical Chinese sources, and Western bio-scientific medicine to produce astonishing, consistent results.

The class will yield a wealth of new information for first-timers and old-timers alike. In live treatment demonstrations, Kiiko will perform treatments that address the Upper Tan Tien (memory loss, vision problems, neuropsychological conditions), Middle Tan Tien (anxiety, insomnia, other Shen disorders, cardiac, and digestive problems) and Lower Tan Tien (adrenal burnout, infertility, lumbar and pelvic pain.) *

You will learn the foundations of Kiiko treatment style: Measuring pulse rate to determine treatment strategy; a palpation technique to assess the effectiveness of acupuncture points before they are needled; and how to balance the immune, hormonal, and nervous systems with acupuncture and moxibustion.

From quicksilver illustrations on the dry-erase board (spiraling umbilical cords, a Han Dynasty cooking pot, a cranial nerve pathway, the sacro-iliac joint, or the Chinese character for “phoenix”) to a riff on North American eating habits, the perils of insulin resistance and the postural consequences of visceral fat; from speculations on the true meaning of Chapter 8 of the Nan Ching to a by-the-way demonstration of a little-used acupuncture point that beautifully addresses ilio-tibial inflammation, Kiiko’s classes are a tour de force.

Don’t miss out on what one repeat attender calls the “Kiiko Jolt”: An elevated sense of enjoyment and effectiveness in one’s practice that arises from time spent with this inspiring and transformational teacher. Perhaps no other living acupuncturist is able to convey the power and wisdom of Oriental medicine in such a playful, compelling, and practical way.

Whether it’s an introduction—or a re-introduction—to Kiiko’s style of acupuncture, this class will change the way you think and practice.
